    Talking Are we on the right track?

    We are homeschooling, that is certain, I'm just trying to make sure we are on the right path.
    I have been working with my preschooler by showing her words and having her find the matching letters to complete the spelling. I have been trying to get her to copy letters,(that has been fun), and I am letting her play. We love being outdoors and if we come across an insect, a feather or anything else that may catch our interest, I will explain to her what it is and it's purpose or if I'm not sure....we will look it up either online or in a book. Sometimes my kiddo isn't all for the learning aspect of it, however, I'm trying to help her gain knowledge without even realizing that she is learning.
    I guess I am just looking for suggestions, and/or some positive feedback to let me know that we are doing just fine. Thanks so much

    It sounds like you are on the right track to me. You don't mention how old your child is. There is a big difference between a 2 year old and an almost 5 year old but the term preschooler could cover either and any age in between. You might be able to get more specific suggestions if we know your child's age.

    My current preschooler is 4.5yo. He is currently obsessed with fireflies, outer space and horses. We read books about these topics, watch videos (last night we watched a video on how a farrier puts shoes on a horse on YouTube for example), we play make believe about these topics, we make art projects (we made fireflies out of construction paper and painted them with glow in the dark craft paint)... We count everything, we talk about adding and taking away, we talk about halves and wholes, we have calendar that we look at and talk about, he likes to get a ruler or tape measure out and measure everything, he like "how to draw" videos on youtube, we sound out words, we practice writing his name and simple words with chalk, in the sand box, in the air, in paint... he has tons of apps that let him practice everything from word skills to math to handwriting.

    If he loses interest in "learning" about something, we don't push it. "Lessons" do not last more than 15 minutes tops, usually 5 to 10 minutes is the norm. That's not to say that he doesn't continue a lesson he is enjoying for much longer than that, but I try to keep the actual teaching to less that 15 minutes at his age, while slowly working up to about 20 minutes by the time he is 5.

    I think adding phonics in is very good for this age. In this book are some good games that are on various levels of "schooly." At first they don't include letters - just sounds.

    There is no right track. I mean, there might be a few "wrong tracks" but there's definitely no one right track. It sounds like you're on one.

    Other things you could be doing with a preschooler (some of which you probably are already, but none of which are absolute necessities...

    - read aloud often
    - play counting games
    - play with mathy manipulatives - Cuisenaire rods are a good one, or an abacus
    - let her help in the kitchen by helping measure things or stirring
    - let her make her own cereal in the morning
    - work on tying shoes, getting dressed
    - work on putting things away or organizing things
    - make up a song to help her memorize your phone number and her address
    - get art idea books and art materials out to play with them and try new things
    - play pretend games
    - use pattern blocks to make patterns
    - sing songs

    Thank you for your replies. Yes, I am currently doing some of the things suggested, like having her help in the kitchen, making up songs, however, the making up a song to remember address/phone is a wonderful idea. My daughter is 4 and she loves fire trucks, any/all animals and when daddy pulls out the tool box, there she goes. She has some of her own kid friendly tools but daddy has the coolest ones. We read all the time, and I have been sounding out words with her. If we are out for a walk and there is a street sign, (stop, crosswalk, etc) I will show her the word, we will go through the letters and then sound it out.....she has done very well with it. It's been tricky trying to get her to trace letters, she isn't a fan of coloring. She is always in motion and I am hoping that in time she will settle down enough for handwriting. Thank you so much for your suggestions.

    Hi there! It sounds like you are doing a great job. Something hit me though when I read this and your original post. It reminded me of what I used to say about my now-14-year old. She hated to color or trace etc. She just scribbled to be done. While I'm sure this could be normal for many kids, for mine it continued through the middle grades where it became apparent that she had dysgraphia. If I had to do it all over again, I would have cut out my urge to get her to trace and copy and instead worked with hand strength exercises...just like squeezing play dough, weaving, finger plays, finger paint, sidewalk chalk, catching balls etc. Just some ideas to get through the pre-lettering stage.

    Seconding the above excellent advice about honing small motor skills. Now's the time. It's very true.

    Thirding the fine motor skills practice.
    My younger has been in therapy for this, and I can see how the problems I had with my older boy stemmed from not building those crafting and coloring muscles. (My older one LEGOd extensively - clearly its not a sufficient activity for developing FMS - maybe its because the activity needs to be more sustained?)
    You could also try Mazes and Dot to Dots for hand endurance. And try getting some OT pencil grips that put the fingers in the proper position for ease of use.
    We also use Crayola markers instead of pencils, pens, or crayons because it doesnt require a lot of pressure to make lines. (This is for the 5yo.)
    My older son still looks like hes in a wrestling match with his pencil... amd prefers to type.
    Oh how I wish I had done those stupid crafts when he was younger!
