    Our family has always been passionate about the great outdoors. Mostly because we live in the Blue Ridge Mountains, which is about as pretty a place as you can possibly imagine (if you have to imagine it, then please do come visit this area, ‘cause it’s worth the trip!!) But also because our sons love getting outside. Even in their deepest stages of internet-attachment, they’ve craved a way to expend some of their pent up energies. Our boys grew up hiking multiple times weekly, and we live in a fairly small size city, as well, so when they wanted to go somewhere, they walked!

    I hate speaking for our other SHS Admin, aandwsmom, but I’m pretty sure she’ll tell you herself (she’ll be chiming in for the discussion part) that the natural world has always been deeply ingrained into their family as well. I love it when she lists all the animals they currently house on their city-dweller property. It’s boggling to the mind!

    So, she and I decided with Earth Day approaching, we’d love to kick off a discussion ...

    You know those fuzzy little creatures we all love and that give us love back! Yep, dogs and cats. Let's call them "traditional" pets! Not everyone can have them due to where they live, allergy restrictions or any number of things!
    Think you can't have a pet? Think again!

    Not only are pets great for kids, but you can use them as part of your homeschool. Homeschool mascot, learning pet care, studying their habitat or life cycle is science plus reading about them, figuring out the supplies you need, space, etc. all adds up to a full homeschool day! And you can expand from there! You also might be surprised that no matter where you live - - from apartment to farm - - you can become an official certified wildlife habitat. That's a homeschool project begging to happen, isn't it?!

    Whether you live in a small apartment that doesn't allow pets, a small house with no space, have a postage stamp size backyard, kids or parents are allergic or even have sensory issues that don't allow for pets per se, you can still create a great animal habitat for either non-traditional pets or wildlife.

    How do I know this? Well, I have had ...

    I've said it forever. Secular homeschoolers are THOUGHT-ful people. Yes, we can be empathetic, but what I really mean is that we tend to ponder deeply on subjects that interest us. And what's even cooler is that when one of our tribe is at a crossroads and asks for advice, we offer it. Well-thought-out, built-from-personal-experience kind of advice...the best of all kinds!

    Recently, on our Facebook page, one of our followers asked the following;

    I have one son who won't tolerate ANY kind of reading instruction and he's almost 8. I've been super patient, and understand that different kids read at different ages, but I'm starting to panic a bit. He asks to be read to, so I know he enjoys books, but he simply doesn't want to learn to read on his own. Is this a real issue for some kids, or just a power struggle? HELP!
    And she was lucky enough to receive over 70 replies from our members! I've crowdsourced some of my favorites, in case they will be helpful to people here at SHS, too! ...

    Weekly Poll: Would you consider joining and participating in a SHS Book Club?

SecularHomeschool.com is a community and information source where secular homeschoolers ARE the majority. It is the home for non-religious homeschoolers, eclectic homeschoolers, freethinking homeschoolers AND anyone interested in homeschooling irrespective of religion. This site is an INCLUSIVE community that recognizes that homeschoolers choose secular homeschool materials and resources for a variety of reasons and to accomplish a variety of personal and educational goals. Although SecularHomeschool.com, and its members, have worked hard to compile a comprehensive directory of secular curricula, it does not attest that all materials advertised on our site, in our newsletters, or on our social media profiles are 100% secular. Rather, SecularHomeschool.com respects the aptitude of each individual homeschool parent to fully research any curriculum before acquiring it, to ensure that it holistically meets the educational, personal, and philosophical goals of each homeschooler.
