    Default Hello from Australia

    Hi there. I am homeschooling my three kids in a beautiful spot in Australia. We are reasonably active in our homeschool community. Happy to have found a home to freely express any homeschooling trials and tribulations.

    I am feeling a little strange as an "other" amongst our homeschooling groups which are largely Christian. Recently it has caused some mild problems for both me and my children as a few of our closer homeschool friends have really put the pressure on to yanno, find jesus...let god's light in...etc etc etc.
    Lots of invites to Christian Writers Programs and homeschool holiday church camps which I REEEEAAAALLLY don't want my kids attending (they have recently been to some church groups with these friends that were ultimately preaching in the guise of "family fun". The content wasn't great. My 10 year old hearing that without "God, Man is Nothing" and learning about Man's supiority over animals whilst on a "Boy vs Wild" day, was one of those moments of cringe.) Another came quite recently after one of my son's friends told him he can "fix" his own family when he chooses to have a family by believing in God. A mother recently prayed for me (which I gracefully accepted as an expression of her love for us) but whilst she was praying she asked God to "please, PLEASE let your light find this family and help them heal!"

    I encourage a wide selection of friends from different backgrounds and belief systems but I am finding this new territory with slightly older children interesting to navigate.

    Anyhow I don't intend my introduction to be a bagging of Christian homeschoolers (there's really more to us! And I do love these people dearly as do my children) however I am grateful to have found this community to discuss curriculum and the like without the usual cascade of Christian leaning suggestions.

    Welcome! We live in NZ. That is great that you have a big and active homeschool community, but not so great on the others trying to force their beliefs on you. We are not very experienced homeschoolers (only 3 years), but there are lots of helpful members on here who have been homeschooling a long time and can answer all sorts of questions.
    New Zealand-based. DD 11 (year 6 [NZ system]) homeschooled, and DD 6 (year 1 [NZ system]) who is currently trying out public school.

    Freelance copyeditor, specializing in scientific text, who will make mistakes in my posts (I don't self-edit).

    Hi! I'm new here
    I'm in Australia too and am finding the same problem. I've recently connected with a few locals, and it's starting to become clear that they're all Christian! Prayers are being offered and church mentioned. I'm feeling outnumbered and just don't like it really!
    I also just feel it's inevitable that we will be diverging on sciencey topics before too long, so there's not much point continuing to meet up??
    I'm hoping my comment will bump this thread for some others to share tips!! I'll probably end up creating a secular group (fb) but I don't expect there will be many (preschool/foundation/kinder age)
