DS-12 was in public school through 4th grade. They did spelling tests from K-2. When he was in 3rd grade, Common Core was adopted and they were teaching spelling through "authentic experiences" (actual quote from his teacher). Which meant the kids were supposed to absorb spelling through what they read, but on things the kids wrote, the teacher NEVER corrected any misspelled words. About the last quarter of that year, they brought back spelling tests, but it seemed like the teacher was using the kindergarten list of words again.

We have done Wordly Wise every year since homeschooling. It's more about learning vocabulary, but we add in a spelling quiz at the end of each section. I might drop the spelling aspect after this year, but continue on with the vocab books.
