    Default Where to put this thread

    I don't know where to put this thread but since I have a kinder, 4th, 9th and 10th this year, I don´t know if i´ts possible to do any unit studies which helps me incude them together because the 9th and 10th Iḿ planning for them to have their grade specific curriculums and if I help them for hours at a time, how do I keep the young ones busy and not just alone all day/? i'm also sad that a structured progam leaves no time for read alouds as family or unit studies. Hoping for some ideas on how to manage this. Thanks

    Why are you planning grade-specific studies / curriculum for your “high schoolers”?
    It seems you know that you want more of the read-alouds and unit study type of homeschooling environment, why not look for something that allows for that? The topics taught in schools are typically the same and repeated through the years, why not make the Kinder and 4th and 9th and 10th the same subjects? Pick a science curriculum geared to the high school age, visit the library and youtube for supplemental things the youngers will understand. Pick US History (or whatever topic floats their boats), let the older ones collaborate on projects, and the younger ones float along watching Liberty’s Kids and the American Girls (Dolls) historical videos.
    Have the olders read and dissect the literature that the youngers just get to enjoy. The Scarlett Letter is probably a little much for the littles, but Im sure all the kids would enjoy a more lighthearted story from the era.
    I think for any topic, you can find unit studies for any age range, you just may need to mix and match a bit, and modify to suit your needs.

    You really shouldn't need to be spending hours a day helping your high schoolers. They should really be able to work mostly independently and just check in with you throughout the day. If they have some kind of special needs that requires you to spend hours with each of them, then you may need to outsource some things because you are only one person and there is a limit to how many things you can realistically do in a day. Ideally, your 4th grader is going to be the one who needs the most one-on-one time with you since it is unrealistic to expect a 4th grader to be completely independent but it is completely realistic to expect high schoolers to be mostly independent with their work.

    With such an age spread, it's going to be hard to do a unit study for all of the kids, but you can do themes. For example you can decide that this year everyone is going to study medieval history. Your high schoolers will have their own texts and literature related to the period, your 4th grader will have their own texts and literature selections related to the period and your k'er will just catch what they can and maybe do a little bit on castles and knights. Same with science, if both your high schoolers are doing biology this year, then have your 4th and k'er study biology topics as well at their own levels. Really, anything beyond the 3r's is gravy for your k'er. Even the 3r's are optional in K in my opinion, it can wait until first grade if they really aren't interested in school yet or you just need to get your older kids trained and working more independently this year.

    Only English and math really need to be specific to each of your high schoolers abilities. They can both study the same history and science and even in English they should be able to study the same novels. Everything else they can study together unless they just have an interest in an elective that the other one has no interest in.
