    Default Saxon Math and English...preparing for them?

    My 13yo daughter started 7th grade at a local full-time academically advanced charter school last fall. She entered at the beginning of second quarter and placed into Saxon Math Course 3. After a few weeks of struggling to keep her head above water with the spiral method when she'd missed the first 35 lessons, we requested to move her to Course 2. We were stunned to discover that the material was largely the same and that we'd put her in a worse position because the school has a policy that calculators aren't allowed until Course 3! She is surviving...she got a B that quarter and a C this last quarter. She's currently averaging a B. She struggles with Hake (Saxon) English as well, having no background in it and having missed first quarter, and not receiving much guidance from the teacher. The sentence diagramming is the most difficult for her. I can't even figure it out to be honest and I'm not dumb. She has been managing to get Bs in English (her writing and reading comp scores even out the lower Hake scores) and has had As in all her other classes. I feel good about THAT and I do NOT believe she was behind in any way, especially since the school is 1-2 grade levels more advanced than the state requirements. I beat myself up for a while watching her struggle with two core subjects, but I got over it. I just think Saxon is....Saxon.

    This post isn't really about her, but about my 11yo son. He's doing great homeschooling a mix of 6/7/8th grade material depending on the subject. There has been talk among he and his sister that he MIGHT want to go to her school starting with the 2019/2020 school year. I'm OK with him going, as my daughter is thriving there (she went because of their music program) and I think he would enjoy it as well. He has an early-August birthday and school here starts mid-late July, so he could go into 7th grade a few weeks before turning 13 in July of 2019.

    My concern is to prepare him for Saxon Math and English without actually having to do them NOW. Since they just do not click for us. I've tried working with him in Course 2 but he just really doesn't like the approach. If he goes to that school, he'll have to get over that when he starts, but if he IS going, I want his last year+ of homeschooling to continue to be fun and rewarding while still making sure he is maybe better prepared in Math and English. Any ideas?

    Ugh. That's a tough dilemma. The Saxon approach is pretty old fashioned and is very focused on procedure - taking apart the grammar, knowing all the algorithms, being able to do a LOT of problems really quickly like drills.

    You have the benefit of knowing what's coming. I think I would do the year you want to have - the year that will be right for him, that will be rich and fun and relaxed before he heads to the charter. But I'd devote one morning or afternoon once a week to doing work that preps him for the specific skills that all that Saxon work is going to demand. And if you don't get to everything, that's fine. I'd focus on the grammar stuff and any topics in math that you think are most likely to trip him up. I wouldn't try to do the whole program by any means. I'd keep it within the confines of the time. Whatever you get to is great, whatever you don't, he'll deal with when he gets there.

    Thanks for the response ~ totally makes sense! I think I have a handle on math but grammar...ugh. LOL Nothing seems to fit the bill but if he DOES go to this school, I'll make sure he starts at the beginning of the year so he won't be at a disadvantage in that way at least!
