    Default Books for Autistic 12yo

Hi all. I know I'm asking a lot here but I need some engaging books for my autistic 12yo DD to read. She has the Amelia Bedelia leveled readers and really enjoys those. I don't know if she's up for chapter books quite yet. She reads at about a late 2nd grade-early 3rd grade level. I'm thinking that sticking with the leveled readers might be my best bet but y'all may have some ideas I haven't thought of yet. TIA!

What sort of reading are you looking for? Things to help build her reading fluency, books to engage her imagination? What are her language processing limitations?
Im asking because from the little youve said, it reminds me of my youngest, who has significant language processing issues. He can only handle so many words being thrown at him, and does better when he has pictures. I dream of the day when we can stop rereading Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel!
Our favorite reading material is Ranger Rick Magazine. (Where he reads aloud to practice both is speech and literacy.) The articles are short, and there are lots of pictures with captions for us to discuss. If your DD reads at a 2nd grade level, she would probably do fine with them, and might appreciate that the text is smaller and not so babyish.
If you can find out what it is about chapter books that are too much for her, you might be able to find alternatives that work for her. Illustrated books and graphic novels might be places to look! (I never liked comic books, but have a suspicion my son would do well with them. Way fewer words being spewn at him!)
Good luck, and dont underestimate your DD! Shes 12, probably a little beyond Amelia as far as plot sophistication. Its not easy finding reading material that matches asynchronous development!

    Atheist.

My spelling was fine, then my brain left me.
