    Break out of the February/March homeschool slump with a few easy ideas from Secular Homeschool.

    Why Do We Get Homeschool Burnout?

    February/March is upon us and along with overcast skies, rain, sickness…. comes the homeschool slump. Yes, the slump. It is a real thing. January brings us back from Winter Break, refreshed, renewed, and ready to jump into it. February/March brings the slump also called homeschool mom burnout. We have been cooped up, whether from weather or sickness. We are missing the fresh air and sunshine. We are all tired. The curriculum has lost its bloom. Parents are tired of fighting kids who would rather be attached to a screen.

    Most homeschoolers get it. It may happen in February, it may happen in March but it happens. We lose that zest for homeschooling and just want to be done for the year. It happens in our house all the time. You would think that I would be used to it since we have been homeschooling since 2008… but nope. Usually the first few days of grumpiness, I assume they are getting sick or extra tired. Or that I have an attitude. Then I remember what month it is. Slump month. *Sigh*

    How do we get over it? How do you get over it? Let me tell you my secrets and hopefully, some will help you. Grab a cup, put your feet up and we will work this homeschool burnout out together and get us ALL over the February/March slump.

    11 Ways to Beat the Homeschool Slump

    1. Change up your day. Easiest way. Rearrange your curriculum day. If you homeschool in the morning, try having a lazy morning and school in the afternoon. If you have a set schedule for the order you do subjects, change it up. Put all subjects in a jar and let kids pick the order daily. This gets them involved and breaks up the doldrums.
    2. Find some new activities. You may not be able to get outside with the weather but check out your local community center for fun classes. Try something new. Sign-up for a cooking class together. Get out of the house and learn something different, together or as individuals.
    3. Switch with another homeschool family. Once a week, trade kids and teach them. New parent/teacher and new learning style. Or you can just switch up to teach your specialty. You do math well while your friend loves cooking. Teach her kids math while she teaches yours a new recipe.
    4. Buy a new curriculum. While many are happy with their current curriculum and stick with it, others are less than thrilled. Change it up. No rule says you can’t change curriculum mid-year to suit your homeschool needs.
    5. Change up your homeschool area. A little paint does wonders for an area. Perks it up. Add in some new shelving or organizational carts. Even educational posters can revamp it. Make this a family activity and have the kids help you figure out how much paint you will need or if the new shelf will fit.
    6. Get physical. Add movement and exercise to your day while learning. An indoor trampoline or jumping jacks while reciting spelling words. Jump rope while counting. You can even tape out hopscotch on your kitchen floor with math problems or spelling words within the squares.
    7. Turn to life skills. Put your regular homeschool routine on the back burner and work on life skills. Do some pre-spring cleaning. Teach them how to clean the toilet or wipe the baseboards and why it needs to be done. Bake some bread together. Learn about paying bills or even how to do taxes!
    8. Live in an overcast area? Installing daylight full spectrum bulbs can help the mood. They produce the same spectrum as natural daylight, therefore enhancing our mood, helping our body think it is still in the spring/summer. Helping our mood, helps us break out of the slump. You can even turn learning about Seasonal Affective Disorder into a homeschool lesson. Homeschool win-win.
    9. Turn simple everyday tasks into homeschool lessons. Grocery store trip? Have the kids write the list: writing, and spelling.✔ At the store, have them read the list: reading.✔ Have them figure out the best deal between brands: math.✔ If they are curious about new food, have them write it down and then research at home to learn more about it: writing, research, and history. ✔And guess what, the whole process builds life skills too.
    10. Find a penpal. So many homeschool groups host or have parents looking for penpals. You can even find foreign penpals. Have your children practice their writing and spelling skills while connecting with a new friend.
    11. If all else fails. ESCAPE. Hop in the car and take a drive. Discover new areas in your town. Make sure to drive on streets that are new to you, observe new areas, visit a

    new-to-you park. When you get home, have your homeschoolers journal about it. What did they see? What did they like the most? Hate the most? We have discovered so many new things in our city by doing this.

    Hopefully, some of these ideas have helped you break-up your February/March slump aka homeschool mom burnout and make it through. Soon, warmer, sunnier days will be upon us and we will move our learning outside to soak up the much-needed vitamin D. Until then we will be changing up our routine a bit to get us out of this funk.
