I am THANKFUL!

November is all about being Thankful. Technically we should be thankful ALL YEAR, not just one month but for some reason it takes THIS month to remind us of that. And that is OK. We tend to get wrapped up in life in general and if we need November to tell us to slow down and think of things we are thankful for, so be it.

First and foremost, I am thankful for Secular Homeschool. Not only is it my job but it my life. I love each and every one of our members. I love coming up with content, finding important and interesting things to share with you, reading what is going on in your lives, and knowing that we at SHS are making a difference in homeschooling.

I am thankful for my family. That my husband fully supports homeschooling, as does much of our extended family. I know that not everyone is lucky to have that. Even if we didn’t, we would still be homeschoolers. My kids, my right. They have flourished as homeschoolers in ways they would never have in the system. I am thankful that my state is an easy going homeschool state. I have little to report and we are free to do homeschooling as we see fit.

I am thankful for a roof over my head and food in my pantry. Life is hard and there are many out there that don’t have either of those things. I live in a high homeless area and see it firsthand. I am thankful that we were able to help create 50 food baskets this year for those less fortunate. It shows my children empathy, support, and brings awareness to helping others. I consider it a life skill and one that I hope they pass along to their children some day.

I am thankful for my other job, being a childcare provider. It has allowed me to work from home for over 25 years. I did this job prior to having my children, I did it while they were young, I did it while they were in school and thankfully, I was still doing it when we became homeschoolers so it was a smooth transition to incorporate homeschooling into our daily lives because I was already working from home. I am thankful for the little lives I take care of daily. Each one has left a special spot in my heart.

Lastly, I am thankful for my boys. They ARE the reason I homeschool. They ARE the reason I am a Mom. They ARE the reason I do my job for Secular Homeschool. Public school works, when it works. For my boys it didn’t. And that is ok. We landed on our feet with homeschooling. Their love of learning grew and grew and honestly, has not stopped. Even as young adults, they are still learning with online college. And if given the choice between junk TV or learning TV, they will be found watching something educational 99% of the time!
