• Animal Cams: The answer to an easier end of the school year!

pizap-com15591482602221-jpg Animal cams are one of my favorite things to utilize in our homeschool, especially this time of year! Not only do we get to observe nature at work but the babies! OMG! SQUEE!! Not to mention we are on wind-down aka homeschool burnout as we push to finish the year. Observing and note-taking on this is still learning, with a twist.

I provide several choices to my boys. They can also research for a specific animal cam if they are so inclined. They are also given a journal. Usually we do it the last 6-8 weeks of school, starting at the beginning of May. At least once daily , they must visit the cam and spend a few minutes(or longer) observing and updating their journal. Funny thing is, usually it starts out they do the basic minimum time but as the weeks go on, they get really involved in watching the babies appear, growing, feeding time and so on.

What part of homeschool does this cover? Science, research, writing, spelling, reading, observation skills, patience, zoology, computer skills...just to name a few. You could also expand it into math, history, geography and PE. Have them study the animals they are observing. Check out how long they have been around. Estimate the amount of food they eat per day or the size of their habitat. Create some movement exercises based on that animal. You can easily fill out the spaces in your homeschool day with animal cams.

Here are a few of my favorites:

If you discover any fun ones, come back and share it in the comments section. I am always looking for some new ones to observe!

This site is an INCLUSIVE community that recognizes that homeschoolers choose secular homeschool materials and resources for a variety of reasons and to accomplish a variety of personal and educational goals. Although SecularHomeschool.com, and its members, have worked hard to compile a comprehensive directory of secular curricula, it does not attest that all materials advertised on our site, in our newsletters, or on our social media profiles are 100% secular. Rather, SecularHomeschool.com respects the aptitude of each individual homeschool parent to fully research any curriculum before acquiring it, to ensure that it holistically meets the educational, personal, and philosophical goals of each homeschooler.
