Science is all around us!

Science has always intrigued me and is my favorite part of our homeschool day!I always wanted to be a Marine Biologist, until I realized while I loved the science part.... I sucked at swimming and masks on my face freak me out..... ummmm, kind of a requirement!LOL


So instead, I passed on my love of science to my boys!
And if you get really creative, homeschool science can be EVERY part of your school day!
Math, History, Language Arts, Writing, Socialization, Spelling and Reading are ALL included in Science.


Science is EXPENSIVE you say?! WRONG!
Many tools for science can be found in your house RIGHT NOW! Yes, you can go hog wild crazy at Steve Spangler website and buy all the cool things or zip to your local teacher store and pay thru the nose BUT with a little creativity you can use items you have at already OR head to the thrift store and get substitutions for pennies....especially if you are doing experiments that might otherwise ruin your everyday household items! Think outside the box!


There are books galore on science experiments for fun, for kids, for boys, for girls, for blowing things up(yes, there is a book for this) and for anything in between! And you don't have to limit it to things that take experiments! Science is all around us every day! Everything can become science.

• Brushing teeth....science. Test your mouth before you brush. Look thru your saliva with a microscope. Brush your teeth. Look at your saliva again. Get those pink pills the dentist uses to show amount of plaque on your teeth. Get different brands of toothpastes. Test them for taste or grittiness.

• Making lunch...science. What happens when you add heat energy aka the stove or oven to your PBJ? Does it taste better or worse? If you heat it slow, how long before it starts to darken? If you heat it fast, how long?

• Weeding the garden....science. What types of weeds are out there? Why are they growing? Why are more in one area? Experiment with what natural things will kill them safely. Vinegar? Salt? Hot sun? Hot water?

• Taking the dog for a walk....science. Observe around you? Look for items to bring back and study. Is it hot outside? Why? Is it cold outside? Why? What animal wildlife do you see? Are they doing anything interesting?

• Caring for your pets? Have you created a the proper habitats for them? Experiment with different foods for them? Do they like vegetables? Do they like fruits? Why?

Then...like I said at the beginning....you can take whatever you are doing in science and expand on it! Find books to read on that subject! READING! Create a spelling list from stuff that has to do with that science. SPELLING! Younger kids, you can have them sort and add things. Older kids, if it is experiments...they may have to do Math to figure out proper amounts to make experiment work and be safe. MATH! Give them a journal to document and write about what they did, what happened and why. WRITING!
