shsunschooling-jpgIt's time to showcase the beauty of UNSCHOOLING this month at SecularHomeschool.com! And what better place to do that than on Instagram? Help us spread the UNSCHOOLING love by taking some pictures of your UNSCHOOLER at work, at play, at...whatever it is they are passionate about at the moment.

A WHOLE month, showcasing your UNSCHOOLING blogs, groups and ideas on just how do you UNSCHOOL your children! Most importantly we would like to show all those doubters out there that UNSCHOOLED kiddos are no different and maybe have some things better then other homeschoolers and non-homeschoolers alike. So take some pictures of your UNSCHOOLER at work, play or whatever!
To participate, simply post your UNSCHOOLING homeschool day pics on Instagram and hashtag them #UnschoolingonSHS . We'll be running a stream of the most recently tagged photos on our SHS sidebar AND on a dedicated tab on our Facebook page. We can't WAIT to see how you are spending your days - - whether it's gearing up for new learning, or winding down from your summer adventures!!

Imagine yourself at 10! We can wait....Got that in your mind?!

Ok, now close your eyes and remember that feeling of running to the mailbox and finding you have - GASP - a letter!

Yep, that feeling. You were giddy. It was awesome if it was close to a birthday and it was a card for you that might contain some spending money from Grandma. Or a catalog that was the latest and greatest toys! Or my personal favorite, a letter from someone you never met but totally knew! What? A pen pal silly!

I loved having pen pals! We did it for both kids in other States and other Countries. All of mine were through school, our teacher would hand out a sheet and we would end up with someone in another State or Country. And in a few short letters, you would learn all about each other. Some lasted awhile and some only the school year. Makes me wonder why we ever stopped!

Oh yes, the discovery of the world wide web! Yep, email. You can chat with lots of people in lots of different States and Countries from the comfort and convenience of your couch. Great right? WRONG! You do not have the feeling of pen to paper, the joy of addressing it to someone and licking a stamp. Okay, I know NOBODY licks stamps anymore...they are stickers now but I am old-fashioned!LOL And then waiting a week or so for a return letter!
As we have discussed in the past, writing is a lost art. Especially in public schools.....sad but true. But, we homeschoolers will NOT stand for that! No way, no how! Write we must!

SecularHomeschool.com is excited to announce a giveaway from Hands-On Equations.

Provide your child with an exciting introduction to algebra! With the learning system developed by Dr. Borenson even your 8-year old can be introduced to advanced algebraic concepts in a fun, game-like manner. Using pawns to represent the unknown x, and numbered cubes to represent the constants, your child will soon be solving such equations as 4x+3=3x+9 and 2(2x + 1) = x + 14, with full understanding. Your child will then learn to apply these concepts to the solution of verbal problems such as “Chris is two years older than twice Sharon’s age. If the sum of their ages is 26, how old is each? “

The Hands-On Equations Deluxe Home Packet presently sells for $79.95. SecularHomeschool.com members can use the promotional code SHM to receive a 10% discount through October 31, 2012. For more information go to www.borenson.com and under the Home Tab click on the Parents' Home page.

fb2-pngThis month, SecularHomeschool.com is partnering with Hands-On Equations to give away a Hands-On Equations Deluxe Home Packet to five lucky members! Here is what others are saying about this hands on approach to learning Algebra...

    - Julie Brennan, LivingMath.net

    - The Old SchoolHouse- The Magazine for Homeschooling Families
"I cannot tell you how much this program helped my struggling visual learner. After my son did a couple lessons with Hands-On Equations, he was much more confident tackling his math problems."

We are totally excited that author Ron Martin has agreed to let us give the free PDF version of his amazing poetry writing program for FREE. The only thing he is asking from us that we contact him to give him our thoughts about his book.

    Overview of "Future Poets"
“Future Poets” has One Hundred and One Poetry Challenges, Lesson plans, Poetic Devices explained, as well as Copyright-Free poems for speech presentations. It can be a stand alone poetry unit and is great for substitute teachers and last-minute lessons. This book is for all my fellow teachers who enjoy poetry and believe their students will become better writers if they keep practicing. Kids often just need something interesting and challenging to write about: that is how this book can help. Poetry, with its conciseness, emotion, and lack of punctuation, is a great way to begin each school year and ease the kids into other forms of writing. Poetry lends itself to success. Anyone ...

SecularHomeschool.com is a community and information source where secular homeschoolers ARE the majority. It is the home for non-religious homeschoolers, eclectic homeschoolers, freethinking homeschoolers AND anyone interested in homeschooling irrespective of religion. This site is an INCLUSIVE community that recognizes that homeschoolers choose secular homeschool materials and resources for a variety of reasons and to accomplish a variety of personal and educational goals. Although SecularHomeschool.com, and its members, have worked hard to compile a comprehensive directory of secular curricula, it does not attest that all materials advertised on our site, in our newsletters, or on our social media profiles are 100% secular. Rather, SecularHomeschool.com respects the aptitude of each individual homeschool parent to fully research any curriculum before acquiring it, to ensure that it holistically meets the educational, personal, and philosophical goals of each homeschooler.
