My 9 year old son is obsessed with Minecraft. I know there was a thread somewhere else on this forum about it, but I can't seem to find it! Just wondering if anyone has found any kid-friendly servers? He is currently playing on a server called Nyancraft. It's not 100% kid friendly (occasional bad language), but it's pretty good overall. Wondering if anyone has a child around his age that would like to meet up with him online somehow so they could play together?

I would love to find a kid-friendly server, though I have been pretty lazy about it. Right now, my son (also 9) plays on our gamer group server, but the new address hasn't been made public knowledge yet. So it's mostly safe from bad language (you should see it when its full of our friends, though! Definitely not child-friendly).

Another new member has children who made their own server. If I had the know-how and bandwidth (that's what those things of internet stuff are called, right?), I'd give it a shot. LOL I've definitely got to look for something for my son, so he can play multiplayer with other children.

Oddly enough, it's Minecraft-raining on my husband's computer right now. And I need to get back in to the server and work on my newest castle. ;)

My boys play (I'm the one who asked the original question), I'll ask BOO what server he likes and let you know. I've set up a private server so my boys can play with each other but it's definitely not something I'm can open any farther.

@ Jinxie- I *think* I would have the know-how to build a server. i researched it quite a bit the other day. I just don't think I would have the time to monitor it 24/7, and I also don't want to invest the money to build a decent-sized server and keep it up and running monthly. (From what I figured out, it would be between 30 and 70 bucks a month, and I'd rather use that money on Starbucks! haha)

@Pefa- If you could let me know what server your son plays on and if he'd be interested in joining up with mine, that'd be great! :)

My teen said there aren't really many kid friendly servers, but you can usually find some on the forums. Also, he used to have a hosted server. I think it could only have like 4 or 6 ppl logged in at once and only cost about $15/mo. You don't need your own dedicated machine, yu can just rent space on someone else's machines. Then you only have to worry about administrative tasks . . .white lists, black lists, mods, mods that are incompatible with each other . . .

Both of my kids play, as well.

They do like the servers, but really they don't seem to talk much to anyone but each other LOL. Mostly, both play in creative mode, so they are always building something.

Would love to have a kid-friendly server they could join!

On a side note, ds loves to watch youtube vids about minecraft, and lately there are several that feature kids using Minecraft in ps. Cracks me up!

My 9-year-old also loves Minecraft and has a group he plays with regularly. I'll ask him how kid-friendly the servers he frequents are because (terrible mother alert) I don't worry much about language online. He's heard just about everything and as long as he doesn't use the language himself, I don't fuss too much.

My son has a server, but I'm not sure if it is up right now or now. My husband got behind on all the new stuff my son wanted to add. I can let you know what it is when they get it back up. There are usually just 2-4 kids on there.

but if you run a server on your own computer 1. its only up (for other ppl) when you have it online, and 2. you have to open your computer to strangers (which dh wasnt willing to do) and also it wont probably like you doing much else at the same time. freinds of my son's who have tried running them on their own computers, its usually really laggy and slow

Well, when my son's is up, it is always up unless they are adding new stuff to it. It is definitely not on one of our computers. My husband is a computer security guy and wouldn't open up our computers to strangers. :-) He is pretty obsessed with security. It is on his business servers where they do web hosting and have an email service, etc. The nice thing is it is free and doesn't really have space limits. The bad thing is Ian was driving my husband crazy with all the different things he wanted added and my husband told him he had to do them himself. (in my husband's defense, he would be gone all week and when he got home Ian would meet him at the door bugging him to do hours worth of minecraft updates, etc.) Ian got frustrated doing them himself and is now waiting on dad to get time to help him. Sort of patiently. If anyone is interested, I can let you know when they have it back up. It will be at least a week or two.

Yup, my son has heard it all too, so that's why I don't worry about him playing on our gaming group server too much. The server was initially open to other members of the group, but then some modifications were made to it. The address has changed. My husband and I get to play on it before the new address is made public, because we're mods/admins on it.

Also, before the address was changed, the server was basically abandoned - just me, hubby and one other guy (an admin, whose language isn't a problem). The server may see a surge in gamers once we make the address public, but I am sure interest will die off again after people build what they want to build.

Despite that, I'd never suggest the server to children in general. There *are* shenanigans at night, which my son naturally misses out on, but kids back home in the U.S. are in the right timezones to catch the most inappropriate things. LOL

The guy who runs our server works for a computer company of some sort, so nobody is putting out personal computers or internet for it. Nice if you have the job that gives you the resources to do it, eh?

Rachel, I'm definitely going to check out Nyancraft. Thank you for sharing. :)

@kcand-I always want to finish it "the sunshine band" my boys would totally love to know when your server is up. Too bad we aren't closer because BOO has gotten good at modifying the server in ways I can only blink at.

@rachel - I can suggest that BOO try out Nyancraft, he said he'd look it up. his user name is "stford". BOO also wants to know how experienced your son is and whether he minds getting killed by a group of mostly nice and helpful people. Also does your son want the RPG feel to the server. Burnt out mom that I am, I don't monitor a whole lot of screen time. I check in about the days adventures and watch over their shoulders from time to time, but I trust them to find their own niche. So, I'll apologize in advance if I steer you wrong.

DS is 7 yo and has been playing Minecraft for a year now. He's even started his own YouTube channel so he could recording himself playing and making things to teach other people how to make them. My ex got the game for him as a way to interact/play with him since he lives in NYC & we are in GA..helps to keep them connected. They have their own server but not sure how open the ex is to having others play on...right now only my niece, nephew & I have access...it's because him and DS usually always have some big project they are working on...I can ask though.

If anyone is getting together to play online somewhere, I would love to know. DS is really good but doesn't like playing with people that "aren't nice" (aka people that destroy his buildings, use bad language or try to kill him).

I actually have my own account and get on and play/monitor as well.

Pefa-- My son's username on Nyancraft is BAPeters. He said he doesn't mind getting killed by people, but he gets upset sometimes if they steal his stuff after they kill him. There was some drama the other day when someone killed him and stole a 'diamond pick-axe' that he had worked hard to mine diamonds for and create. So I guess he takes his diamond stuff seriously! Other than that, he is very laid back and good-natured. He loves running around with other characters and doing team-building and using the chat function and stuff like that. He has only been playing MC for about 3 months now, so I don't know what his level of expertise is, but he seems pretty good to me. He builds some cool stuff and he talks about 'single player commands' and downloading texture packs and different things. We don't have a dad around to help him, so unfortunately I had to Google all that stuff and figure out how to help him with it! Haha. So hopefully that will give you and your son some idea on what he likes to do/how good he is, and if your son would like to play with him sometime.

As far as the server build, I had checked into building one in Amazon's Cloud, because I don't want ppl accessing my network, nor do I have enough bandwidth or space to host a decent network. But the Cloud costs per hour that the server is up, so I don't think it could be a 24/7 thing. I thought about having it up evenings and weekends, but this might not work well for people in other time zones. I'm still thinking about it though...

And as far as bad language, he's heard pretty much all of the cuss words you could think of from watching Let's Plays on youtube. So I'm not super worried about that, but when he came to me asking what a blow job was, I decided it was time to monitor his internet usage a bit more closely!!!! So if he's on a server where there's a bit of language and inappropriate joking, it's not a big deal, I just worry about him hearing TOO much, too soon!

@kcanders - BOO was wondering if your ds' server is up? He wondered if we could take a road trip to help your ds update the server (mind you, BOO is very new at server modification but once he gets a bee in his bonnet, he is persistent). I pointed out it was a long way from VT to IL, he countered w/it would be educational. But don't worry, we aren't going to show up on your doorstep unannounced.

@Rachel - I'm sorry, I keep forgetting to get BOO to mail me the link to the server. It is quest based, you will get killed but most of the other players will give you back your stuff and BOO likes the fact that they all seem to be friendly 13yo boys.
