Hi! I'm so thrilled to have found this forum. I have a soon to be kindergartener. I look forward to meeting alot of you, and honestly, picking your brains.

My husband and I have considered homeschooling since I was 4 months pregnant. In the last year, we had thought to let him try Kindergarten in public schools, but now that we have gotten down to the wire, we are re-reconsidering.

I'd love to chat about early years curriculum and activities. :)

Welcome to the site RubySugar. This has been a very helpful place for me. I hope you'll find the same. I pulled my son out of public school in October of his 7th grade, but I wish I had started so much earlier. Looking forward to getting to know you better.

Hi and welcome :) There is a group for preschoolers (http://www.secularhomeschool.com/group.php?groupid=14) and elementary age children (http://www.secularhomeschool.com/group.php?groupid=11), if you're interested in joining and getting them going...

Welcome, RubySugar!! I'm with Snoopy....I'd love to see our early learner groups get more active. We have a TON of intros from people who say their kids are either not quite homeschooling age yet, or like yours, and just about to get started. Maybe you can add some posts on the groups and it will encourage others to participate more!! But also feel free to post anything in the general forum as well, of course!! Glad to have you aboard...

Welcome! We're going to start homeschooling our 12 year old son this fall so I don't have much in the way to offer regarding early learning, but I'm sure there are plenty of people here who will be able to offer you wise advice.

Welcome to the GROUP, I think that you will find everyone up here is great at helping you come up with ideas.

I now homeschool my 13 year and my now 8 year old, and we have been doing it for 3+ years now. Alex(13) I pulled out after 5th grade and Anthony(8) was pulled out after Kindergarten. Let me tell you that I wish that I had NEVER sent either one! Alex had a rough time from day one (ADHD) but it never occurred to me to pull him out and homeschool. We moved every 2 years and so he had 3 schools by the time he was in 5th grade. Then the school district pulled us from our magnet school and was trying to put us in a poorly rated school, among other problems.

Anthony only went to kindergarten, and having volunteered in one of their classes almost daily I could see how when you get labeled on day one it sets you up for the rest of the year. Anthony was labeled average, so that meant he didn't cause trouble and was making his benchmarks but he wasn't getting any extra help to see if he could go further. I pulled him out with Alex and have never looked back. His first grade end of the year tests, showed end of 2nd grade reading and comprehension and almost 4th math skills! We are still working on spelling and writing but I am not worried he will get there.

Here is what I used and loved, Five in a Row (some titles are very religious but I just skipped them or just prepared for his questions on religion), they have lesson plans that you can do with your child from Art to Math to Social Studies. We also use time4learning.com (he loves the cartoon based lessons) and I usually sat with him to make sure he was getting it, we now use singapore math, story of the world and all about spelling.

Check these out and see if they are a good fit for you!
