I decided that since we are covering ancients in history this year (classical education), I want to do some hands-on creative activities inline with that time period. We will be making baskets, pottery, "cave paintings," etc. We already made fossils (that was fun: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jenaside/5103048118/). I'm also trying to come up with a good garden activity to also go with our upcoming science unit on plants. Rather late, I came to the idea of growing wheat to harvest around the time of that unit, but realized that I missed the window for winter wheat by about three weeks.

I've had success growing lettuce and other edible plants inside. I briefly googled growing wheat inside and it does not appear that is generally successful. Has anyone tried any garden activities related to "ancients" that are do-able indoors?
