Today I saw some woven placemats in the kitchen section of DollarTree. They might work as Montessori work mats. Some reminded me of braided rugs and others were maybe made from polyester yarn. $1 each.

One of the ideas I've been kicking around is to make this type of mat for sale. Now, I couldn't do it for $1 but can you describe the ideal mat? Should it be fuzzy soft or simply wicked flat or multicolored or plain? I've got to start generating some income!
Thanks,
Mel

We actually don't follow true Montessori, so we don't even use the work mats. I thought I'd post it for those that are looking to get started with it and keep costs low. Sorry I can't be of help.

M1's school used cotton mats that were maybe 18"x24"? I remember thinking that they reminded me of 2'x3' mats. I'm guessing you can see some on Montessori Outlet.

Given how much places like Niehaus charge, I'm thankful for 'em! :D
