Yes, this is how we sometimes do it at home. Find weird facts to make history interesting.

someone posted this directly to me, and i saw it on fb a few times - but my boys both hate 'gross' stuff.

Much to my chagrin my kids love gore and nasty. Like they are super into the red fairy book and I even edit out the extreme stuff bc my kids are young. The language is above them but the creepy factor draws them in.

My kids really like the "You Wouldn't Want To Be a..." book series. My son, in particular, loves all the gristly, gross details.

This would be a great mash up with our Horrible Histories books.

I like this stuff... but I often worry that we're turning history into "other" in a way that goes too far with some of the gross out history out there.

Still, I haven't read the others, but Poop Happened is a great book, and so are Horrible Histories. History is kinda gross sometimes.

Some of my better discussions in homeschooling DD have revolved around gross things in history. (My dog, when she learned the Puritans did not bathe--like ever--and the Native Americans could smell them coming...let's just say she was hooked! So yes she knows the names of all the British monarchs because of a Horrible Histories song.) But here have been where the discussions get interesting: what would future people would say about OUR grossness: hello smoking? hello petrochemicals, flame-retardant clothing, BPA, and even plastic body scrubbing beads? High fructose corn syrup? Oh yeah.

How about bad plastic surgery like ridiculous over-the-top implants and frozen distorted faces?
