Wasn't sure of the best place to post this, but here it is:

'Classes' start 12/2, and it's supposed to be free. Might be good for those who want to know more about creating web pages from scratch.

This looks really interesting. I've been trying to get my son more interested in working on the computer in any capacity, and he's recently asked for some kind of coding class. I'll definitely show this to him. Thanks for posting this!

My son took this. The man doing it does a pretty good job. My son learned a lot and it was super simple to follow.

The guy doing it, Frazier O'Leary, is also putting together a homeschooler newspaper (online only...not printed) where the kids write the stories/articles. It's still ground-floor, but sounds like it's got potential.

Updating...

DS just completed this course and LOVED it. He can't wait for the next classes coming up in other programming languages. I was really impressed with the instruction (from what I overheard, anyway) and the communication. For anyone interested, it's geared toward independent use though parents can certainly take it too. For us, this was a *perfect* and timely way for DS to take his first online class, and completely independently. The next session starts in early January.

Also, for anyone interested, there is a (totally separate) course called Hour of Code that was developed for public schools but available to anyone for free (code dot org). It's scratch based and very fun and engaging. DS devoured the first "class", even though he hadn't been interested in scratch previously. Yay for a new passion! :)

Mr. O'Leary posted a new link (not sure if the other is still working since those classes are already underway) for the January 6 session if anyone's interested:

I believe he also has another series following his 101 classes...it's supposed to cover css. :)

Thank you! This could not have come a better time. Trickster actually starts video game design in January (using Python?), so this will be an excellent complement class.

Hope they enjoy it as much as DD did! She wants to do the javascript and CSS classes, but we have to wait until GS cookie time is done. If you beat us to those, definitely let us know what you thought of them.

DS is taking the CSS course and loves it. He typically completes a lesson + extra credit assignment every day. Can't thank you enough for posting about these classes, Carolyn! :)

Since Hour of Code was mentioned in this thread, I thought I'd post the following link here: Join the largest learning event in history, Dec 8-14, 2014 (http://hourofcode.com/us)

This is from their site:

Anybody can host an Hour of Code anytime, but the grassroots campaign goal is for tens of millions of students to try an Hour of Code during December 8-14, 2014, in celebration of Computer Science Education Week. Is it one specific hour? No. You can do the Hour of Code anytime during this week. (And if you can't do it during that week, do it the week before or after).
