View Full Version : Introduction from middle TN

Hi everyone! I'm Kelly and I live in middle TN (about an hour south of Nashville) with my hubby, 2 kids, 2 dogs and 2 cats. We are a pagan family stuck in the buckle of the bible belt. Not a good decision to move here but hindsight is 20-20. ;-) We started our homeschooling journey in FL and it was easy enough. We had no issues with filing letter of intent & evaluations. We found evaluators that were cool with hs'ers that didn't follow a "school-at-home" model and were comfortable. The law in TN reads very confusing but isn't that tough. Still a pain in the behind but you can work around it. We are registered with a secular CRS (church-related school..what they call umbrella schools here). No matter how you homeschool in TN there is plenty of paperwork (busy work for hs'ing parents). Our biggest issue is that we are surrounded by conservative, close-minded, Christians. Whee! Hope to find some like-minded folks around.

Welcome, Kelly! I know it is hard to homeschool when there isn't much local secular support around you. ((sigh)) We do have a small, but growing group here on site of TN secular homeschoolers (http://www.secularhomeschool.com/group.php?groupid=32). Drop by and join them! We also have a list of secular/inclusive support groups in Tennessee (http://www.secularhomeschool.com/content/203-Secular-Homeschool-Support-Groups-by-State) as well. Glad you found our site in the meantime...hope you will hang out with us often! :)

Hi Kelly! Welcome to the group. I went to the University of the South in Sewanee for a year and a half. That area of Tennessee can be really pretty. But it does tend to be a little conservative. :) I hope you enjoy this group.

Kelly, welcome! Our family is currently in Alaska, but we will be relocating back to Middle TN soon (our farm is just north of Nashville). We lived there for several years before an adventure in Alaska. We started our homeschooling adventure here in Alaska where the homeschooling laws are very liberal. So, I'd be curious to hear your take on homeschooling in TN. With our impending move back to the bible belt, I've been looking all over the internet for resources on secular homeschooling in TN. As a southern gal who has always been an atheist, you will find like-minded folks. I find that anyone who is not the typical conservative, Christian tend to keep to themselves in regard to their beliefs. It just takes a little bit of work to find the like-minded people. We are out there and would love to meet you!
