Hello again, Topsy! I apologize for this delayed reply. We were out of town and I didn't get to message you before we left. Crazy, crazy small world! That is so wild that you had relatives and used to visit Anniston (of all places)! My husband did not recognize the Medders names that you mentioned, but he doesn't remember many names. I've sent a message to his sister in Anniston and she is going to check their family tree.

Sorry to message and run, but I've got to start our usual Sunday night routines (we haven't started homeschooling yet, so there is school tomorrow).

Hi Topsy! I couldn't reply to your original private message to me because it says I don't have the credentials yet to send private messages (guess I'm still too new?). Anyway, I enjoyed getting the message from you. I'm at home all day with a nonverbal kid, so I welcome any form of adult conversation.

Medders is my married name. My husband and I grew up in the same town of Anniston, Alabama. There were two sets of Medders that lived there. One family was in the home construction business and the other (the one my husband is related to) were in the car repair and rebuilding business. So when someone found out you were a Medders they always asked you house or car haha!

This is our first stint at homeschooling, so I'm appreciative for this forum! Thanks again for the message!

Hi Topsy! Thanks so much for the contact. I'm really glad to have found this site. It was getting frustrating not being able to find secular sites or groups lol. I have tons of questions about homeschooling, but am trying to wait patiently for a reply from other groups or answers through research. Again, thank you! I plan on definitely getting some use from this wonderful site

Facebook Break - The Follow-Up

by Topsy on 12-09-2010 at 11:28 AM
What a weird age we live in where I actually blog a follow-up on my experiment to take a Facebook break until the end of the year!!! But for those of you who were wondering if I could really do it, I REALLY have. And it has been GLORIOUS!! Now that's not to say I haven't even so much as been on the site, because that would be a lie. I'm on the site a LOT for the sake of this site and others that I administer, so I'm by no means a Facebook-hermit, but the only times I've even visited

Could I dare take a Facebook break?

by Topsy on 11-22-2010 at 04:59 PM
Something has happened to me since turning the big 4-0 this past weekend. Suddenly I'm re-evaluating lots of different things in my life, and for some reason, my personal Facebook account is taking top billing in the "re-evaluation" category.

I'm trying really hard to decide if Facebook has added or detracted from my life the last few years I've participated in it. It definitely has detracted from my TIME, for sure, but I'm having the most difficult time putting all that time spent

Homeschooling and Dual Enrollment, Part One....or "I wanna be a textbook publisher!"

by Topsy on 08-20-2010 at 11:47 AM
This fall marked a brand new era of education for our family as our oldest son is now 16, the minimum age you must be in North Carolina to participate in a dual enrollment program at your local community college. He had been practically counting the days through the whole of last year until he could take part in what he views as a true "rite of passage." Something about taking courses with college students at a real live institution of higher learning has been big on DS's bucket list for some

Make Way For Change!

by Topsy on 03-16-2010 at 10:55 AM
This is the first year that my family and I have ventured into the exciting and uncertain world of "interest-led learning." My oldest son prefers to call it "free-form schooling." And my younger son doesn't even mind throwing around the controversial "unschooling" term. (I refuse to let him use it around our more judgmental friends and family members) My sons are technically in their eighth and tenth "grades",
