Thread: Sentence Strips??

    Question Sentence Strips??

Does anyone use sentence strips? What do you do with them? We have a bunch and I have a strip board that we're using, with poetry and other 'lines' of text, but I'm looking for something more creative. Any suggestions?

I don't even know what a sentence strip is...LOL! Sounds interesting, could you maybe explain it? I'm always on the look out for new ideas!

I've seen people use them to make timelines. They tape them together so they can fold it up, or they put them on the wall end to end.

I have one of the pocket charts from Targets dollar spot and I use the sentence strips in that since they are the perfect size. I use them for things I want the kids to learn so right now it's our address and phone number. I was thinking of using them for part of our calendar when we start school again - Today is....Thursday; Tomorrow is....Friday; Yesterday is....Wednesday - kind of thing.

Sentence strips are basically big lined index cards - like, REALLY big. Traditionally, they're used for writing out words or sentences or phrases and can be used on the wall or in a pocket chart. We have a calendar station and we have sight words on some; I've also seen teachers use them for things like character qualities, moon phases, weather and stuff like that.

We've used them to build with (but they're kinda flimsy) and for crafting - I was just wondering if anyone had an idea that I hadn't heard of for them. We have a huge package and were thinking about a timeline. I kinda want to do one that's a 'school year' long to start. I've read that time lines aren't as useful for kids under 4th grade or so - we're using hyper history's timeline right now.

We used them for copywork when I helped teach K--several would be put out on the table and the kids would have to copy them in order to make little stories. It didn't work very well--for one, they couldn't read yet so it was really hands on (go figure!), plus sharing them among a group of 5 year olds who all needed the same cards at about the same time was sort of a recipe for disaster.

I wonder why timelines are said to be not effective until grade 4? My son loves them--we're going to do the timeline-in-the-hallway idea this year. As long as your kids are aware of different times in history, I think they sound fun.

That's kinda what I thought re: timelines... I can't remember where I read that they don't get it till they're in upper elm.

We've kinda dropped copywork in favor of handwriting and journaling. It just works better for us - I started using copywork as 'busywork' and I don't really want my kids doing something just to be doing it, y'know?

I'm with you on the "busywork". Occasionally I'll feel like DS ought to do a worksheet or give some "proof" that he's learned something, but then it seems so extraneous, really unnecessary (not ALL worksheets mind you, just when I feel like I "should" put something in the portfolio). I'm still trying to balance that.
