    Question Grammar check

Let me start with grammar is not a strength of mine. My 19 year old son (not home schooled) has written a book and wants me to edit it. I was able to pass that on to DH BUT it is taking SO much time (darn that job and family responsibilities ) . IF it were my book I would hire someone to edit it, but he is a broke lad so I thought I would come on here and ask you ladies if you had any ideas or sites that can help edit a whole book. Thank you in advance

That is great he has written a book, that is a huge effort!

As a professional copy editor, I have to say that it is not a job that can be done by a computer. Its not just a set of rules that can be applied in all situations, there are so many decisions that go into what rule to use, whether to use one at all or if bypassing the rules is better, and all sorts of other things like contributing to structural editing (reordering of text to improve readability and flow) and developmental editing (suggesting things that could be added to improve the story), checking for consistency of terminology and abbreviations throughout the text, and more.

You can get really really really cheap editing done if you advertise on sites like freelancer.com. Not sure about the quality though!

If he wants to go through it bit by bit, there is Grammerly, which will help apply some grammar rules and check spelling. However, it is really proofreading not copy editing, so it is not necessarily going to produce a coherent text with good flow, readability, and consistency unless his text is already like that and all it needs is a few basic grammar and spelling fixes.
