Hi. We live in W Bloomfield.
My 13 yr old son is homeschooled. 8 yr old still in PS. He thinks hs will be too hard (:
Have you found any classes that aren't affiliated with religious groups? Everyone I know who is in a co-op or class is in a christian science class, etc.

We just started in Jan. as well, so I haven't had much time to look at all the local groups. The ones near here are religious affiliated, but some seem less so than others. We are not sure what we will be doing next year, still working out the plan.

I'll be happy to share whatever we know.

So good to hear back from you!

What age are your kids? Have you tried any classes or co-ops? We have acquaintances in two different religious-affiliated co-ops, and just aren't interested.

We especially would like science classes and those are hard to come by without a creationist bent, from what I've found.

I'd be willing to go as far as Ann Arbor (once a week), if its the right fit.

Here is one moms effort at doing it on her own. I know she is more secular than not, and she's in the area. She taught it a few years ago, and documented her effort for others to try and copy. I'm not sure all the links still work, but it would be a good starting place:

    Hope this helps.

I'm that mom, and I'm nearby in Livonia, MI. The links are all fixed on my blog Quarks and Quirks (see below). As for co-ops for high schoolers that are secular, I've heard about one in Warren (OHG) that goes all the way up, age wise, that I'm fairly certain is secular. I've messaged a member for more information.

We've collected a group of families quite informally down here, all fairly liberal and secular/pluralistic. It's not a group, but at least I know we're not alone. I think it's harder to find a group with high schoolers. Among the folks we're around, many of the kids are taking some classes at the local colleges (Schoolcraft College and Madonna University are very homeschooling friendly with more affordable dual-enrollment rates). This may be the way to go for high school science. Let me know on or off list if you want more information.

Thank you so much. Its great to hear about others in the area, and what has worked for you.

What is OHG in Warren? I tried googling it, but no luck. Thank you for messaging the member. I'll look forward to hearing about it.

The info about the colleges is helpful, too. DS is not scientific, but enjoys it, and we certainly want him to have a good working knowledge. He is ADHD, very bright and enjoys language/writing so ELA and Spanish go pretty well for us, math and science not so much. He is gifted musically and physically. I read your blog about your son fencing and playing the piano. DS plays trombone and piano, and is a brown belt in mixed martial arts. He is also an international adoptee, so I can take no credit for his talents.

I really look forward to hearing any more info you can give me.

Check your notifications (upper righthand corner) for the info on the co-op. They don't have a public website as far as I know (or it is mighty hard to find).

My older son, 15 next week, also has ADHD and is quite bright. He, too, plays piano and achieved all but black belt in Tang Soo Do (his choice to stop then). I don't have his fall plans up thus far, but they'll be on my blog soon. Feel free to message me or email me off list if you want to chat more.

    I'm glad you're here!
