We do a lot of family gifts for the holidays (ie Christmas and Yule) and usually we give money to go camping (buy the food, gas, pay the site fee), but it is technically already in our budget for the year. The kids still get super excited. They were also super excited to get a membership to the local science museum. I say as long as they don't feel duped, then why not.
