I just wanted to say that Amradiofairyland wins! Thanks for the suggestion--it looks like exactly what we were think of overall. He's been wanting to do more stop-action movies, plus I'm hoping it will give him some underlying basic knowledge of video editing. Then I can direct him toward the DIY videos. I'm still interested in any non-Apple editing programs out there, especially free since his Christmas shopping is now done! Yay!

It's going on my Amazon wish list right now! My kids love watching stop motion Lego videos and would love to make some of their own. Dammit, I wish the grandparents hadn't already bought Christmas presents for the kids...

Here's to a very "animated" winter! I can't wait to see/hear about what our kids come up with!

Sorry, I haven't been on but it seems like you have gotten some suggestions.

For the iPad, you could purchase an iPad 2. It can handle importing videos and photos. It also has a camera so you can film on the iPad and edit. iMovie works well and then you can upload the movies to your computer. DS is 7 and has been using iMovie for a couple of years now, to give you an idea of how easy it is to use.

If you are interested in stop-motion videos, you don't need a special camera. Just a digital camera and a tripod. We make stop-motions videos here at home with legos and other toys. What you do is put the camera on the tripod and don't move it while you are working on the scene. Move each item in to place and take a photo each time you move an item a little bit. It is time consuming, but the effect is great. Add some music and you are set. I will have to see if I can find one of them to post.

The HUE Animation Studio kit is a success! My son is on the laptop putting together his first movie. He is kind of clueless on computer programs, but he has had no trouble so far, so I would say that it is super user-friendly. How is your daughter liking it, Amradiofairyland?

Also Try Sony Vegas Pro. I think my Son has been using a free download of 8.0 to create his little vids he does.

Glad to hear it's so user friendly! Would you believe my daughter hasn't opened hers yet? She's a "slow Christmas" kind of kiddo (perhaps being autistic and easily overwhelmed contributes to this tendency in her), and opened only two presents yesterday! She also seems to sense it's a "special" present, and may be saving it for last. I'm so eager for her to get going with it! I hope your son's movie turns out great. Definitely post an update on his results!

My daughter opened her HUE Animation Studio kit this morning and it has been an animation love fest all day! She has been working on a short "adventure" featuring two of her I Am Elemental action figures, and it's so fun and funny. Definitely, this was right-out-of-the-box easy-to-use for her, and great for her imagination and interests. It's fun thinking of others out there making these kinds of movies, too!
