• Celebrating NOT back to school day!

As many public schools start back for the 2017-2018 school year, we as homeschoolers like to celebrate. Celebrate that the museums, libraries, parks and galleries are once again going to be free of crowds. Celebrate that our choice to homeschool gives us the freedom to wait and enjoy these places when the time is right.

Many of us like to create a special event to celebrate what is affectionately called, “Not Back to School Day”(NBTS). Traditionally, this is the day in your area that public school restarts. Homeschoolers enjoy the day by doing something that public school kids don’t have the luxury of doing because of school hours and attendance requirements.

A NBTS Day commemoration could be something as simple as staying home and watching movies all day, or as elaborate as an entire day out and about. We have friends who go out for a big breakfast, then head for the local bookstore, ending the day at the movie theater BEFORE public school kids get released from school for the day. Others attend the local amusement park and enjoy the freedom of no lines.

In our house, my boys are allowed no schedule for the day. They can sleep as late as they want, eat what they want, do what they want. Since our homeschool usually starts a month before the public schools go back, a day of goofing off at home is a luxury.

Whether you are new to homeschooling or a seasoned veteran, creating a NBTS Day tradition can make memories that last a lifetime. Come up with a surprise for the kids, take a trip or keep it local. One of the joys of homeschool is that you are the school.

What traditions would you like to create in your homeschool? Will it be for NBTS day or another reason?
