Recently, I was introduced to a brand new resource that I simply must pass along to you secular homeschooling peeps. AMAZE is a completely non-profit, non-partisan tool for making sex education less weird and lots easier for students and parents. AMAZE uses humor to try and lighten-up some of the more awkward aspects of talking about the many changes of puberty.
Just what is AMAZE?
AMAZE is an animated video series for the digital-savvy 10 to 14 year old that provides factual,non-judgmental, and age-appropriate information about puberty, periods, body image and sexuality in fun, bite-sized clips. If we want our children to know the facts about their bodies, have healthy expectations about relationships, and share values like respect and consent, we need to talk to them early and often.
Why AMAZE is not “just another sex-ed” resource
When creating this resource, the people behind AMAZE wanted to ensure that the videos are all age-appropriate, medically accurate, inclusive of all young people and reduce some of the angst young people may be feeling by promoting the positive message that “different is normal.” The content of the videos is inclusive in that it depicts people of different races, gender-identities, sexual orientations, and body types. It doesn't shame young people for having questions about their bodies and normalizes how different they can be.
How homeschool parents can use AMAZE
Let’s face it. Many of us homeschool parents have never had a sex education class ourselves. We often feel like we don’t necessarily have the knowledge we need to have fact-based conversations with our children or to answer the difficult questions they may ask. Amaze presents us with this information as well as conversation starters, books and additional websites to explore. It can be used in any way a parent chooses. We know our kids best, and what information is developmentally appropriate for them. By exploring the AMAZE website ourselves, we not only pre-select the content that best suits our homeschooler, but prepare ourselves for conversations that may arise after viewing.
I hope you'll head over and explore all that AMAZE has to offer for yourself!
