    Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!
Whether you are a public school teacher or a HOMESCHOOL teacher, you deserve recognition as far as I am concerned! 30 kids or 4 kids.....it is a hard job!
Rewarding, YES! Would I do it again, YEP!
When my boys were in school, we sent small houseplants and a thank you note to their teachers. Now that they are home, hugs and a thank you Mom is appreciation enough!
But....I am taking time this weekend for ME!
We homeschooling parents do not pat ourselves on the back enough! We accept it for what it is, roll with the punches and keep doing it!
Well, take a pause today to pat yourself on the back....to reflect on what you have accomplished! You have these children sitting in front of you, who are better people for what you are doing! They are growing and blooming because of YOU!
We are finishing up our 4th year of homeschooling and my boys have come SO far in their schooling that I am shocked every day! We were accidental homeschoolers, this was not meant to be a life plan at that point but I knew after the first year that it HAD to be our plan! They grew so much in that first year!
And yes, there have been days when I want to just toss it all...drop their butts off at public school and move before they get home! Heck, they are teenagers after all! But....those are the days we step away, take a deep breath and remind ourselves WHY we do this!
So....do not poo-poo over teacher appreciation day or week! Think back, hours you have spent researching curriculums, money you have spent on stuff that worked or didn't work, tears you have shed over failures or accomplishments, time spent chatting with other parents on forums like SHS who understand what you are going through and most of all.... time spent huddled on the couch or crowded around the kitchen table solving the newest Math problem, conjugating a verb or learning who shot Abe Lincoln!
You deserve a HUGE Pat on the back! A HUG for all you do!
Take time this weekend for splurging on a special coffee or tea, buy yourself that scone, take 10 minutes to check out the ADULT book section at the thrift store(not the school or kid section)!
    HUGS and Happy Homeschooling!

It's BACK...one of the first things we did when we first joined SHS was to have fun write other homeschoolers in different states and countries! It is one way to get your kids into writing for the summer and to learn a little about others at the same time.

To make this a fun BUT learning experience for my boys our first year. I gave them both a map of the world (cheap LARGE ones from Goodwill) and a bunch of star stickers. When we would get a postcard in the mail, they would find it on the map and place a star sticker. Then they would be in charge of finding out facts about that city.... some of the things we often found out were population, how far it is from a zoo, mountain, ocean, etc., is it famous for anything (largest chicken statue, etc), importance of town or city in history, and of course for my boys what animals are native or a big problem that area.

All of this made it so they would race to the mailbox to see if they had gotten any postcards that day. Next is was a race to their maps to see who could find the city or town first. It is a memory that I will not forget of our first year of homeschooling. So what are you waiting for email us for your password to get on this private member only forum!!

We are quickly approaching the start of Summer Season....which typically is from Memorial Weekend through Labor Day weekend. And the nicer weather brings not only the end of a school year but vacations, camping trips, sleepovers, etc. Living in the Pacific Northwest, this is prime time for us to do ANYTHING outside!
We take a family camping vacation every year to the Coast, crabbing, roasting marshmallows, fishing, riding bikes, etc. but this year it will end up being a "staycation"!
Due to some upcoming changes at my husband's work, we decided that this was a smarter move this year. So...we are deciding what we will do locally! There is a lake close by, that we are checking into for a long weekend of fishing and camping! And right next door to it happens to be a Zip-Line Adventure Park.....so we may combine the 2!
Now, I know a lot of homeschoolers choose to go on vacation during the off season because it is less crowded, better deals on tickets, hotels, etc. BUT....many of you live in areas like I do and that means bad weather 9 months of the year so anything we want to do outside...gets put off until our short Summer season and then we try to pack in as much as possible!
So....with the ending of the 2011-2012 school year quickly approaching....how many of you have Summer vacation plans?
This can be as simple as a special day trip or a week off at a high-end resort or camping in the wilderness or endless choices!LOL
So, check yes, no or still under consideration and then tell us what cool vacation you have planned for the Summer or why you are NOT taking one!
Click here to vote on this week's poll!
