screenshot-2018-04-08-9-29-46-pm-pngIn 2017 American School celebrated its 120th anniversary by debuting a new middle school program. In 2018, American School is debuting a high school program to better serve the needs of its students.

“Although we’re proud to have middle school courses in our curriculum, our high school courses have been our hallmark for most of our existence,” American School Executive Vice-President Jeff Cox said. “Our new high school program will give students more flexibility and prepare them for college or the workforce better than ever before.”

Previously American School students had to complete 18 units of credit to earn an accredited high school diploma, but as of July 1, 2018, students must complete 20 units of credit to earn a diploma. Each year consists of 5 units of credit, with emphasis on English, math, science and social studies throughout grades 9-12. Students still will have plenty of space and time to take electives in business, career and technical education, fine arts or world language courses, or add core subject courses of their choice to ultimately obtain the 20 units of credit needed to earn a diploma. A main difference is the flexibility students will have in choosing the course delivery method best for them.

“We’ve always given students as much flexibility as possible in choosing courses and course delivery methods, but previously students had to decide right away if they wanted all paper-based courses or all online courses,” Cox said. “Now we’re taking that a step further and allowing students to take a mix of paper-based and online courses if they so choose. A student might learn English better if it’s done on paper but learn math better if he takes it online. Another student may be the reverse of that and learn English better if she takes it online but likes to do math on paper. We want to give students the best opportunity to succeed.”

Whether students do all of their courses on paper, all of their courses online, or some combination of the two, the cost of a full 20-credit high school diploma program is $3600, with monthly payment plans available. The tuition includes all study materials, grading of exams, and access to the online student center where students and parents and view academic records and receive assistance.

“As a non-profit school, we try to keep costs to a minimum,” Cox said. “It’s important for us to offer high-quality curriculum featuring study materials that are written to standards and include those study materials in our tuition. We know that $3600 is a major investment all at once, but breaking it down into a series of monthly payments of at least $100 makes it much more affordable.”

A similar structure is in place for American School’s middle school program, which consists of 15 units of credit at a cost of $2700. A full paper-based middle school curriculum is available July 1, 2018, but students still have the option to do middle school online or take a combination of online and paper-based middle school courses.

“We’re really excited about our new paper-based middle school courses,” Cox said. “Our course developers worked hard on them, and we’ve heard from many families who are interested in enrolling. We’d like the opportunity to serve those families in grades 6-12, and our middle school program will help us do that.”

All of American School’s courses are available on an individual basis if students are interested in taking them to supplement an existing homeschool program. Tuition and payment plans are different for students taking individual subjects, but American School’s commitment to outstanding service remains the same.

“Many families choose to work with curriculum from a variety of providers, so some students only take one course with us,” Cox said. “We promise to give them the same outstanding curriculum and caring student service that we give all of our students.”

American School also gives students the comfort of taking courses from an accredited institution. American School was the first distance learning school to receive regional accreditation and today is accredited by MSA-CESS, Ai and NCPSA. American School is also recognized by its home state of Illinois as a non-public school, though American School accepts students from all 50 states and more than 65 countries around the world.

“We’re very proud of the fact that we’ve educated more than 3 million students in our 120 years,” Cox said. “When we ask them what they like best about the American School, the majority of them say flexibility. They can enroll anytime, finish anytime and work at their own pace in their courses, whether it’s their first middle school course or their final high school course which may be a Rosetta Stone world language course or even an AP course that could earn them college credit.”
