We are planning to start hs my older daughter next school year (she would be going into 3rd grade). I have a good feel for where she is in reading, and what she can handle in history and science, and I feel confident in my ability to teach those, but as for math I'm slightly nervous. It was never a great subject for me, but she has a pretty good capacity for it and I don't want to mess that up. She doesn't really like math, but she's capable at it.

My main question is how to get a good handle on where to start teaching. Is there a good math assessment tool that anyone knows of? I know where they are in school, more or less, but I want to make sure that's the right place to pick up. I could also use some suggestions for a math curriculum. I plan to do my own plans in most subjects, but I know my limitations.

Several of the math curricula have placement tests. Teaching Textbooks does for sure and they start at 3rd grade.

I do think that where you start completely depends on the curriculum.

Math Mammoth offers an assessment (http://www.mathmammoth.com/complete/placement_tests.php) as well. I found it to be spot on.
